This festival is an opportunity for school children across the county to learn about St Edmund and his importance in Suffolk and especially Bury St Edmunds, the home of the great Abbey.

Thursday 16 November

10.00 am -2.00 pm

KS2 (especially Years 5 & 6)

Meet the Vikings

This will take the form of a Viking Encampment on the Cathedral Garth, consisting of up to 6 tents, creating a living and working space and a separate combat area. The Living History Troupe based in Stowmarket, Blodorn Englar, will demonstrate their authentic armour and weaponry and explain about the family life of the Vikings during the morning. In the afternoon, a realistic combat re-enactment will be take place for all to watch. The children will also take part in some drama, be given the opportunity to make model long ships and discover more about the Viking alphabet having been given a tour of St Edmundsbury Cathedral by our Discovery Centre team.

The Vikings and Edmund

We will be exploring the everyday life of the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons through storytelling and drama, art and crafts and music. In the drama, children will get the opportunity to learn about the Edmund story though the eyes of young Erikson, the son of a Viking boatbuilder. Workshops for weaving, modelling and pendant making will be on offer as well as a chance to discover more about the significance of King Edmund for the town of Bury St. Edmunds.

Edmund Day

Celebrating Edmund and the Vikings

We will be celebrating the story and life of Edmund, exploring the culture and beliefs of both the Vikings and the Christian King and why Edmund was made a Saint. Children will get the opportunity to participate in improvised drama, perform simple songs and find out about the Edmund prayer used at St. Edmundsbury Cathedral.
