St Edmundsbury Cathedral is pleased to announce the appointment of Canon Matthew Vernon as Sub-Dean of the Cathedral. Canon Vernon is currently Canon Pastor at the Cathedral and will take up his new responsibilities from Sunday 18 November, when he will be licensed by Bishop Nigel, the Diocesan Bishop, at the 10.00 am Eucharist.
Canon Vernon has worked in Suffolk since February 2009, having particular oversight of the pastoral work of the Cathedral, both the congregation and visitors. His work with the wider community includes schools, developing links with local charities, and helping organise the Cathedral’s Festival of Sport this summer. He will continue in this role but take on the additional role of Sub-Dean, deputising for the Dean as necessary and assisting with the management of the Cathedral’s work and witness.
‘I am delighted that Matthew will be taking up this role at the Cathedral and will support the Cathedral Chapter in continuing the ministry of the Cathedral as it serves both the Diocese and the Cathedral community,’ comments the Dean of St Edmundsbury, the Very Reverend Dr Frances Ward.
Canon Vernon moved to Bury St Edmunds with his wife, Kate, and young family, Samuel, Joshua and Phoebe, from Hong Kong, where he had worked for the previous 8 years at St John’s Cathedral. 'It is an exciting time to serve in a Cathedral,' says Canon Vernon. 'Only this week a new report shows that over a quarter of adults in England visit Cathedrals each year. They provide a place for people to connect with what’s deep inside them, a space to engage with the sacred and feel God’s presence.' Canon Vernon’s other interests include sport, cinema and ballroom dancing.
