An overview of St Edmundsbury Cathedral's development
| 1065-98 | St Denis's Church built |
| 1121-48 | St Denis's Church demolished: replaced by a church, dedicated to St James |
| c.1390-1402 | New chancel built |
| 1503 | Work began on the new nave of St James's |
| 1711 | New chancel built |
| 1862-4 | New high-pitch roof built over the nave |
| 1865-9 | Another new chancel built |
| 1914 | Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich created |
| 1960-1 | Porch and first part of cloisters built |
| 1970 | New choir and crossing completed |

| 4 - Lady Chapel - Entrance through a fine wrought-iron screen to reveal a beautiful statue of Mary and child Jesus within the chapel. There is are area set aside for prayer and reflection and for pilgrims to light candles and leave their prayers | |
| 5 - Quire and High Altar - North of the Sanctuary is the Bishop's throne. Shields above the Quire are the arms of the barons who met at the Abbey of St Edmunds to enforce the terms of the Magna Carta. Completed in 1970 by Stephen Dykes Bower. | 6 - St Edmunds Chapel - This Chapel is currrently closed to allow work to progress on Phase 4 of the Millennium Project. Two new Chapels will be open in 2004. | |
| 7 - Treasury - Housing the church plate and other works of art including a figure of Christ Crucified by Dame Elizabeth Frink | |
| 8 - Cathedral Centre - Song School for chorister training and a suite of rooms used for meetings, lectures and conferences. Also the Cathedral Refectory open for refreshments Monday to Saturday | |
