The Reverend Canon Michael Hampel is a residentiary canon of the Cathedral and its Precentor. The Bishop has made Michael Acting Dean now that the Very Reverend Neil Collings has retired due to ill health. The Precentor is responsible to the Chapter for the liturgical and musical life of the Cathedral. He oversees the Cathedral's routine pattern of worship and organises all of the special services which occur at the Cathedral throughout the year, both for the Cathedral, the Diocese and outside bodies, like schools and charities. He collaborates with the Director of Music and Assistant Director of Music in the provision of music in the services and sings Evensong every day with one or other of the Cathedral's choirs. He is a member of Chapter and is Chairman of the Arts Committee.
