To the north of the Sanctuary is the Bishop's throne or chair (in Latin, cathedra) which makes this building the Cathedral Church for the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich . The shields above the Quire are the arms of the barons who met at the Abbey of St Edmund to plan how best to curtail the powers of King John and enforce the terms of the Magna Carta.
