	Who's Who - The Dean Chapter l Council l Forum l Staff l Readers The Dean is the principal dignitary, after the Bishop, of the Cathedral and, on behalf of the Cathedral Chapter, directs the life and work of the place. The Dean chairs the Chapter and is ex officio a member of all of the Chapter's sub-committees and working groups. The Cathedral is also a parish church and the Dean is therefore also Vicar of the Parish of St James, Bury St Edmunds. The Very Reverend Neil Collings has taken early retirement due to ill health. The Bishop has made the Precentor, Canon Michael Hampel, Acting Dean.
